Assignment

Design and make a 3D mold (~ft 2) and produce a fiber composite part in it.

I decided to try out the height map in Fabmodules. I would like a very organic surface in my final project like waves of water. I found a photograph of nice, calm waves and I took it into photoshop and put it in grayscale and saved it as a PNG file.

It didn´t come out quite the way I wanted it although I think it´s interesting. I did it again and this time I used a 1/4" tool and did only a finish cut and went down 10mm. Then my results were much more what I was looking for. Then I played around and did a seashell and went down 40mm. I put on three coats of gesso primer in order to seal the foam. We are waiting for the shipment of the resins so we can finish the assignment.

1. Plastfoil

2. Vaselin

3. Burlap + Resin

4. Plastfoil

5. Thick white material

6. Plastfoil with holes

7. Vacuum bag

We used the method as seen on photos - dipping the burlap into the resin and then squeezing most of the resin off. This was pretty meesy process and the results were too much resin. I helped a fellow student do his later on and then we brushed the resin on top of the burlap which worked much better. I really liked my results since I love the shape and the waves. I would like to paint it. I enjoyed going through this process but next time I would use a simpler shape and I would brush the resin on the burlap.
